Crème apaisante à base de Boswellia serrata

This tree is native to the arid, mountainous regions of India and Pakistan, where it grows at altitudes of 250 to 900 meters. Its resin has long been used as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic by Ayurvedic medicine. It is also of interest to Western science, where it has been the subject of clinical trials since the end of the ^20th century.

It's made up of terpenes, including six major ones - boswellic acids - which are its active ingredients. They inhibit the formation of leukotrienes - lipid mediators that promote inflammation by amplifying free radical damage to tissues.

The boswellic acids that penetrate inflamed tissue also improve blood circulation. This extra blood supply nourishes and drains the area, helping to eliminate inflammation.

Liposomes are small, flexible vesicles made up of a double layer of lipids enclosing a water-filled compartment in which active substances - in this case R-alpha lipoic acid and ethyl ascorbic acid - are encapsulated and protected, to be delivered safely to skin cells, where they are released with all their properties intact.

Application

This scientific text examines how frankincense preparations, in particular an extract called Boswellin Super® (BSR) containing a high concentration of 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA), influence the production of lipid mediators (LMs) in human immune cells. AKBA is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to modulate lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes, thereby promoting the formation of lipid mediators specialized for the resolution of inflammation (SPM) rather than the production of pro-inflammatory leukotrienes.

The study used human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM), neutrophils and neutrophil/platelet co-incubations to assess the effect of BSR on LM biosynthetic pathways. The results show that BSR suppresses the formation of pro-inflammatory 5-LOX products and increases the production of 12/15-LOX products and MPS, particularly when combined with omega-3 fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

The authors conclude that BSR, particularly with the addition of DHA and EPA, promotes a shift in lipid mediators in innate immune cells from pro-inflammatory to pro-resolving, which may explain the anti-inflammatory actions of BSR observed in traditional treatments. This indicates a pharmacological potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases without the detrimental effects on inflammation resolution presented by glucocorticoids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
