Thymoquinone, the best of the black cumin

Nigella (or oriental black cumin) has been used for over 5,000 years in traditional pharmacopoeia. It was, for example, very appreciated by the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. In fact, black cumin oil was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen. They consumed it to establish their immortality and, failing that, to extend their life in the best conditions ... Later, the prophet Mohammed would have said that the black cumin could "cure all diseases, except death". It is also cited in the Bible. In the East, where food is considered a medicine, black cumin seeds are commonly used in cooking, whole or pressed, and serve as an antibiotic (in China) or as a stimulant (in India). During the Greco-Roman Antiquity, Hippocrates attributes to it a therapeutic action on the liver and the digestive system. In the Middle Ages, Avicenna, among others, asserts that it acts to remove bloating, warts, vitiligo, ulcers, flu, migraine, congestion, fever...

Today, more and more scientific studies worldwide are focusing on this age-old natural remedy for its exceptional properties, and in particular on its most active component, thymoquinone.

    Black cumin, a multifunctional herb

The name of the genus Nigella comes from the Latin nigellus which is the diminutive of niger which means "black" and comes from the color of its seeds. It is rarely cultivated in Europe, only in a few fields in the South of France and the south of the continent, but it sometimes grows in gardens.

It is an annual that grows from 30 to 60 cm, with a hairy stem, shiny green leaves, light blue or white flowers veined with green. Its fruits develop between April and June, and are harvested before their complete maturity so that their seeds are still inside their capsule. It is from these hard, black seeds, composed of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, minerals and vitamins, that the therapeutic oil of Nigella sativa is extracted.

The value of this oil depends on the quality of the seeds, which in turn depends on their cultivation conditions linked to the soil, the climate, the maturity of the seeds, their method of harvesting, their selection, their extraction conditions, then their packaging and conservation.

    Thymoquinone, a broad spectrum compound

Thymoquinone is the bioactive component of the volatile oil of the black seed of Nigella sativa. It is its most powerful active ingredient, which has been studied since 1975 and to which many properties have been discovered.

    Recent studies

Studies conducted on thymoquinone, in Egypt and Iran in 2000 and 2005, report its properties.

The study by researchers Yimer, Tuem et alii filed in 2019 with the U.S. National Library of Medicine, one of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (the NCBI), publishes this abstract: " Nigella sativa(N. sativa) seed has been used for centuries in different civilizations around the world to treat (...). To date, numerous studies have demonstrated that Nigella sativa seed and its main active constituent, thymoquinone, are highly effective (...)."

In France, a thesis defended in 2015 by Doctor of Pharmacy Badr-Eddine Abdesselam confirms the effect of Nigella sativa via the action of thymoquinone on cell mediators.

    A very active composition

The seeds of Nigella sativa contain a rich alliance of a fixed oil and an essential oil whose major active ingredient is the thymoquinone molecule, their main terpene compound.

The dry extract of black cumin oil used in Nuclei Quantum contains an exceptional 20% thymoquinone titration, impossible to obtain by cold pressing. This extraction technique makes it a highly active and effective dietary supplement.

Moreover, the various parameters resulting from the studies carried out on Nigella sativa indicate that it is not toxic.

Black cumin, which has accompanied our ancestors through the generations, and its first active ingredient found in the volatile oil of N. sativa, thymoquinone, are therefore carefully studied by scientists, which has allowed them to attribute, in addition to their virtues recognized since antiquity, new properties. These discoveries confirm their great interest as food supplements.
